Straus Family Creamery, a California-based organic dairy brand, has recalled select flavors of its Organic Super Premium Ice Cream after a production equipment failure raised the possibility that metal fragments could be present in certain cartons. The voluntary recall was announced on May 14, 2026.

The affected products were sold at grocery stores in 17 states beginning in early May 2026. No injuries have been reported to date. The company is offering replacement vouchers to customers who purchased the recalled products.

Which Products Are Recalled

The recall covers five flavors of Straus Family Creamery Organic Super Premium Ice Cream:

  • Cookie Dough
  • Dutch Chocolate
  • Mint Chip
  • Strawberry
  • Vanilla Bean

The recalled cartons have “best by” dates in December 2026 printed on the bottom of the container. The products were shipped to stores beginning on May 4, 2026.

If you have any of these flavors in your freezer right now, check the best-by date on the bottom of the carton. If it falls in December 2026, do not eat the product.

Which States Are Affected

The recalled ice cream was distributed to stores in the following 17 states:

  • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut
  • Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana
  • Maryland, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania
  • South Carolina, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin

Why This Happened

According to the company, the recall was triggered after Straus discovered a piece of production equipment had become damaged during manufacturing. That damage had the potential to result in metal fragments or pieces making their way into the specific flavors and date codes covered by the recall.

Straus says it acted quickly after identifying the damaged equipment and is providing replacement vouchers to affected customers.

What to Do Right Now

  • Check your freezer for any Straus Family Creamery Organic Super Premium Ice Cream in the five recalled flavors.
  • Turn the carton over and check the “best by” date on the bottom — if it is in December 2026, do not eat it.
  • Do not return the product to the store. Discard it, or hold onto it if you are filing for a replacement.
  • To request a replacement voucher, visit the Straus Family Creamery recall page at www.strausfamilycreamery.com/recall. You will need to submit a photo of the front of the carton and the best-by date on the bottom.

What Are the Risks of Metal Fragments in Food

Metal fragments in food can cause serious injuries depending on their size and shape. Risks include cuts to the mouth, throat, or digestive tract; broken teeth; and in more serious cases, internal injuries that may require medical attention. Children and older adults are generally at greater risk of injury from foreign objects in food.

The FDA classifies metal fragment contamination as a serious food safety issue because the injury potential is high and consumers have no way to detect the contamination before eating the product.

If You Were Injured

If you or a family member ate any of the recalled ice cream and experienced an injury — including a cut to the mouth, a broken or chipped tooth, throat pain, or digestive symptoms — you should seek medical attention right away and document what happened. Keep any remaining product if possible, and hold onto any medical records related to your injury.

When a company sells a product with a manufacturing defect that causes injury, it can be held responsible. A free review can help you understand whether your situation gives you legal options.
